Cognitive Dissonance

"An uncomfortable feeling or stress caused by holding two contradictory ideas simultaneously" - Wikipedia.

Cognitive Dissonance

Inspired by a personal experience in a car accident, this project seeks to counteract the physical and emotional effects of that traumatic experience. Recreating the violence of the impact and recording the emotions through writing and then diffusing it through the comforting and cathartic process of embroidery, a practice rooted in childhood, the method allows the designer to diffuse the emotions.

Cognitive Dissonance

Taking the piece into the context of a cushion or soft furnishing, initially the audience's attention is drawn by the cozy texture, leading to a sudden realisation of the actual content, a paradox of violence and safety. By provoking congitive dissonance in the viewer it demonstrates how the emotions can change dramatically and it reminds us that life could be fragile at times.

I created a research / process book to go with this project. The Book layout was created in InDesign and documented how the final piece was produced from the start to till the end.

The project involved lots of studies, research and material testing. Images above and below shows how texture formed from one object to the other.
